THE ORPHANAGE
EL ORFANATO
GOYAS 08 - WINNER 7 AWARDS
FANTASPORTO - Best Actress, Best Director
BARCELONA FILM AWARDS - Best Film & 6 other
awards.
The biggest-earning Spanish
film in Spain last year, The
Orphanage is an elegant, shivery
ghost story that follows in the
footsteps of such classics as THE
INNOCENTS and THE OTHERS.
Drawing upon children's games,
imaginary friends and the story
of Peter Pan, this supernatural
thriller presents a frightening
adult view of childhood fears.
Laura (THE SEA INSIDE'S
Belén Rueda), her husband and
young son Simón move to a
former orphanage where she'd
lived as a child. But the place has
a disturbing effect on Simón who
befriends some disconcerting
new playmates, who may or may
not be imaginary.
Directed by award-winning
first-time director Juan Antonio
Bayona and produced by
Guillermo del Toro (PAN'S
LABYRINTH), this smart,
continuously surprising movie
begins as a supernatural thriller
but then veers into darker, more
unsettling territory, navigated
by Belén Rueda's extraordinary
performance as Laura. The
Orphanage is frequently quite
scary - a feeling that lingers
long after its haunting, luminous
final shot.
