TEARS OF WAYRONCO
LAGRIMAS DE WAYRONCO

Tears of Wayronco is a documentary which gives voice to the victims of Peru's internal armed conflict which raged for over two decades. In 2003 Peru's Commission for Truth and Reconciliation (Comisión de la Verdad y la Reconciliación) released their finding that over 70,000 people died or disappeared during the power struggle, and many more who survived now live with the legacy.
The documentary-makers interview the indigenous victims of the conflict, Ashaninkas forced to hide in the forests for fear of their lives, and travel to villages decimated by the conflict. They interview members of the Commission for Truth and Reconciliation as well as those named as the perpetrators including members of The Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso), Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA), the Armed Forces, police and politicians.
The narration follows the trail of pain and suffering left behind in the wake of this struggle for power. The interviews evoke vivid pictures of suffering, and liken the victims to the Wayronco, a bumblebee native to Peru, whose flight sound like crying.
