SEVEN BILLIARDS TABLES
7 MESAS DE BILLAR FRANCÉS
Winner Best Actress Goya 2008 And Spanish Film
Critics Circle Awards.
Best Actress (Blanca Portillo) And Best Screenplay
55th San Sebastián International Film Festival.
Nominated for 10 Goyas & 9 Spanish Critics Circle
Awards.
Angela (Maribel Verdú), hoping
to visit her ailing father, sets
off to her hometown with her
young son in tow. She arrives
too late though, and her father's
long-time girlfriend, ex-con
Charo (Blanca Portillo), passes
on the bad news, explaining that
the old man left mountains of
debt that she hopes to cover by
selling off their business: a local
billiards hall, complete with
seven regulation-size tables. An
idea occurs to Angela: Why not
take over the business and try
to turn it around?
Seven Billiard Tables is a
perfect vehicle for showing
Querejeta's great talent
for creating richly detailed
environments, with multiple
story lines and characters.
Impeccably acted (with Verdú
- who won the 2008 Goya for
Best Actress in this role- and
Portillo in particular both
outstanding), moving and deftly
handled, this is stirring viewing.
Spain, Drama-Comedy 2007. 110 mins. (15+)
Director: Gracia Querejeta
