OVIEDO EXPRESS
OVIEDO EXPRESS
Nominated for 7 Goyas
Veteran writer-director Gonzalo
Suarez's crowd-pleasing new
comedy Oviedo Express is a
tongue-in-cheek look at the
cruelties of, and similarities
between, acting and politics.
A theatre troupe arrives in the
beautiful northern Spanish city
of Oviedo by train to stage an
adaptation of Leopoldo Alas' 19thcentury
classic, "La Regenta." (an
emblematic story about city life in
Oviedo in 1885). Their arrival will
forever change the city.
The 'actors' include Benjamin
Olmo (Carmelo Gómez), an
arrogant egomaniac who's
married to prima-donna Mariola
Mayo (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón),
and a depressive alcoholic
Alvaro Mesia (Jorge San), who's
hopelessly in love with Mariola.
The mayor of Oviedo is Ernesto
de Villamarin (Alberto Jiménez)
who's married to a young
doctoral student Emma (BárbaraGoenaga). Emma's mother, Mina
(Maribel Verdú), claims that her
father was an angel. Meanwhile,
Mayor Ernesto is having an affair
with a journalist (Najwa Nimri) and
when Benjamin falls for Emma,
tragedy ensues...
Featuring an all-star cast in
great form, Oviedo Express is an
energetic mix of fantasy, literary
references and romantic drama.
Spain, Comedy-Romance, 100 mins, 2007. (18+)
Directed and written by Gonzalo Suárez
With Carmelo Gómez, Aitana Sanchez Gijón,
Maribel verdú and Najwa Nimri.
