Leo, Alicia and their four-year-old daughter, Dafne, live happily together in Madrid. But when Alicia dies suddenly, their comfortable family life is turned upside down, leaving both Leo and Dafne desolate and stranded. While struggling to overcome his own grief Leo must find the strength to be both mother and father to Dafne. Juan Diego Botto delivers a quietly contained performance of a man who must overcome his own prejudices and sacrifice his dignity for his daughter's happiness. Opposite him, Lucia Fernandez delivers one of the great child performances of recent Spanish cinema. This sentimental family drama about a single father bringing up a child becomes a searching and slightly subversive inquiry into gender roles, parenting and machismo. A compelling modern family drama, this is the third feature from director Achero Manas who found international acclaim for his debut feature El Bola in 2000.
