Ill and bed-ridden, eighty-year-old Antonio, (played by great Uruguayan writer Antonio Larreta) is awaiting the visit of his estranged son, a renowned concert pianist living in Spain, to his hacienda in northern Patagonia. His caretakers are in a frenzy of preparation for this special event. A piano tuner arrives, and the champagne bottle that has been kept in the cellar for forty years is brought out for the welcome toast. Unable to assist with the preparations, Antonio can only examine the world from his window. As he observes the magnificence of the land, his nostalgia grows and his memories of the past seem to permeate his room. Against doctor’s orders, he secretly leaves the house, taking one last walk in his fields, treading the earth, and inhaling the scent of the land that has been his life.
Stunning cinematography, rich humour and superb pacing complement the film’s elegant, quiet beauty.
