  OUR INTERNATIONAL GUEST JAVIER CAMARA

We’re thrilled to be welcoming Javier Cámara to Australia for the first time. He will remain in the spotlight with some of
his best films featured throughout the Festival, and will participate in audience Q&As after selected screenings. Get ready to talk to him!

     
  OPENING NIGHT FILM AND FIESTA

The gala opening night selection of the 2009 Festival, Nacho G. Velilla’s CHEF’S SPECIAL is a delicious farce about a headstrong chef – a huge critical and box office hit on its local release that is set to delight audiences here.

CHEF’S SPECIAL is high entertainment, overflowing with the winning ingredients of wit, vivacity and laugh-out-loud comic timing. The always-compelling Cámara (a 2009 Festival guest) leads a terrific cast that also includes Fernando Tejero and Lola Dueñas.

     
  VIVA LA MÚSICA

The festival moves and grooves this year! For those who love music films, there will be an abundance of choices: Fados - Carlos Saura’s gorgeous new film about Portuguese music; Septembers – a documentary about an unusual song festival held in prison; Mozart’s Don Giovanni - the controversial 2002 stage production; Old Man Bebo and La Mala.

     
  NOCHES CUBANAS (CUBAN NIGHTS)

Old Man Bebo is the inspirational story of legendary Cuban musician, 89-year-old Bebo Valdes, and chronicles of the life and times of the legendary pianist. Members of the touring show BAR AT BUENA VISTA –Cuba’s Grandfathers of Music will introduce.
SYDNEY ONLY.

HORN OF PLENTY is a screwball comedy about the search for wealth in a contemporary Cuba. Screening will be followed by live entertainment and drinks.

     
  CLOSING NIGHT GALA

Finish the festival on a high! The 12th Spanish Film Festival comes to a close with the delightful comedy La Mala, about a woman bitten by the “La Lupe” bug and determined to become a singer.
Followed by a SALSA FIESTA!!!

     
  EXHIBITION
BUÑUEL: AMIGOS Y PELICULAS (Friends and Films)

As part of our tribute to the father of cinematic surrealism, we’re thrilled to present an exhibition of 30 photographs, posters, letters, film scripts and A/V presentations. The materials are from the collection at the Centro Buñuel Calanda, CBC in Spain and will be held in conjunction with the Luis Buñuel Retrospective screenings in three states.

  SCHOOL SCREENING

From the Spanish Education Office, at the Embassy of Spain, we want to help you find the connection between the enjoyable experience of going to the movies and the Spanish language learning experience.

With this goal in mind we offer you a range of activities to work with the films “Cowards” (2008) and “The hairy tooth fairy 2” (2008). Among them we sincerely hope you can find those which best suit each teaching and learning situation before, during and after the film. We are looking forward to meeting you… at the Spanish Film Festival.

Welcome to the 2009 Spanish Film Festival website. From May 6th-17th the Festival celebrates its 12th year by presenting the largest programme of Spanish cinema ever screened in Sydney.

OPENING NIGHT FIESTA
The Festival is delighted to open its 12th edition with the Australian premiere of the terrific new comedy, CHEF'S SPECIAL starring JAVIER CAMARA

Tickets include TAPAS, LIVE ENTERTAINMENT by OJ PROJECT, DRINKS and FILM, plus all attendees will also receive a CD with the best songs from WATUSSI

"OJ Project" - features Oscar Jimenez and other members of Watussi playing a mix of Latin/salsa/funk originals and party favourites.

OTHER SPECIAL EVENTS
Don't miss! Q&A screenings with Festival guest Javier Camara, Tribute to Luis Bunuel (featuring the largest retrospective of his work ever presented Australia!), Cuban Night, Spanish family screening and of course the Closing Night Gala.
