Nearing 90 years of age, legendary pianist Bebo Valdes is one of the greatest living Cuban musicians. This joyful documentary celebrates the man who was a key figure in the development of mambo and whose life reflects the experiences of many Cubans since 1959.

One of the last survivors of the golden age of Cuban music of the 40s and 50s, after the revolution Valdes went into exile for four decades, earning his living in Sweden’s hotel piano bars. But in 2000, he made a spectacular return to the music scene, winning six Grammy awards in subsequent years.

In this heart-warming celebration of life and music, friends, relatives and fellow musicians reminisce about Bebo’s life and a legacy that film producer Fernando Trueba describes as “a triumph of art over all the accidents of life, and an act of poetic justice”.

Members of the touring show BAR AT BUENA VISTA - Cuba’s Grandfathers of Music will introduce the film in Sydney at 6.30pm Thursday May 7 at Palace Academy only
